The Week 6 clash between the New England Patriots and New Orleans Saints had major misfires across the board, quite literally. Not from the teams, but from the broadcasters instead. Following the broadcast blunder, NFL Red Zone’s Scott Hanson had to take time to explain what happened at the Caesars Superdome.

Late in the second quarter, the Patriots were trailing 14-16. Patriots quarterback Drake Maye led a 73-yard drive across just 7 plays that ended in a touchdown. But the CBS scoreboard at the Caesars Superdome couldn’t quite catch up.
The scoreboard still showed 14-16 when it should have shown 20-16. Hanson, on the broadcast, noted that Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel didn’t know the score of the game because of the scoreboard error and went for a 2-point conversion because of the penalties the Pats received on their touchdown drive. Even the scoreboard showed the 2-point conversion as a 1st-and-goal at the Saints’ 1-yard line.

Notably, even the 2-point conversion was officiated as a failed attempt at first, but after a long review by the replay official, the play got reversed and the Pats led 22-16. Shortly afterwards, during halftime, Scott Hanson took a long while to break down the touchdown drive and offered a long-winded explanation about the scoreboard and broadcasting error. But that explanation, along with the blunder itself, didn’t quite sit well with the crowds on social media.

Scott Hanson & CBS face heat for mishaps
Following the scoreboard error, CBS took down the board to fix it and put it back. Fans took to social media to share their frustration (and confusion). One fan asked, “Why did CBS take the score off?” One person explained, while taking a dig at the referees in the game, “CBS Broadcast had an incorrect score up. That announcing team is as atrocious as the officiating.”

Even the official X account of the Patriots took a dig at CBS, highlighting the 2-point conversion in a clip and adding the words: “The 2 point conversion ⤵📺 CBS.” One fan summed up their frustration with the officiating as well as CBS in a single post: “Overall bad operation down in NO rn. Score keepers, refs can we just play ball. CBS is chalked.” Scott Hanson, on the other hand, got his fair share of criticism online as well.

As the NFL RedZone focused on offering explanations for their blunder during halftime, one fan couldn’t help but express their exasperation. “@ScottHanson is #redzone glitching? Why are we still watching the patriots score for the 10th time. Figure it out #NFL.” Meanwhile, another person called out Hanson for the wrong information relayed during the Patriots’ touchdown late in the second quarter. “Why is Scott Hanson so confused? The ref literally said the result of the play is a touchdown when describing the personal foul on New Orleans. You’re the only one confused buddy.”
Despite the setbacks, the Saints managed to climb out with a 25-19 win. The Pats now have a three-game win streak, a 4-2 record, and Drake Maye leading a team that’s firing on all cylinders. Meanwhile, wrong calls, technical glitches, and a confusing broadcast were the highlights around the Saints vs. Patriots Week 6 showdown. How CBS, as well as NFL RedZone, keeps these mishaps from happening again will be something to watch.
