Though Russell Wilson has been married to pop singer Ciara for eight years now, the NFL community can never forget his first wife, Ashton Meem for a special reason. However, the abrupt end of their marriage left fans bewildered, especially as Wilson was ascending in his career at that time. Despite their separation, Ashton’s followers every once in a while wonder where she is and what she is doing.

Ashton Meem’s journey out of the spotlight

Ashton Meem was born to Molly and Lang Meem on September 6, 1987, in Richmond, Virginia. Meem studied at St. Catherine’s High School and that’s where she saw Russell Wilson for the first time. Their first meeting was very brief but then they met again at a summer party and started dating. Meem went to the University of Georgia to pursue her higher education in advertising. They were in a long-distance relationship for some time, but she soon joined Wilson at North Carolina State University to complete her graduation in communications in 2010.
During her college days, Meem took an internship in media marketing. Her academic pursuits led her to a degree in communication, setting the stage for a successful career in the advertising industry. After interning at Lewis Media Partners and McKinney, Ashton Meem gained valuable experience. She eventually became an account executive at Morton Consulting. Her expertise was further expanded with a role at American Family Insurance, where she now specializes in advertising operations.
In 2012, Wilson and Meem tied the knot, just a few months before the Seahawks drafted him. When the NFL Draft was in process and he was picked for $2.99 million contract, Meem’s reaction is unforgettable to this day. However, her cheerful moment of screaming in joy was turned into a meme. Even Wilson recalled this epic moment in an interview and said, “I’ll never forget sitting at the couch, it was 2012. I was at my uncle’s house in DC. He had this white phone on an old school landline, nobody uses them anymore… And the phone kept ringing, he’s a lawyer, clients were calling. I was like, ‘get off the phone, hopefully I’ve got teams calling for me.’ Sure enough the Seattle Seahawks buzzed my phone.”
However, after 2 years Wilson and Meem ended their marriage. Despite the challenges and public scrutiny, Meem has maintained a low-profile life post-divorce. However, that doesn’t make people forget the real reason behind their divorce.

Why did Russell Wilson and Ashton Meem get divorced?

Russell Wilson experienced a personal setback when his marriage to Ashton Meem ended abruptly after two years. The union, initially perceived as idyllic, especially following Wilson’s significant contract signing, faced unexpected turmoil.

Despite Wilson’s request for privacy, speculation swirled, centering on alleged infidelity involving Meem and his teammate, Golden Tate. However, neither Wilson nor Meem commented on this matter. But Tate responded to the speculations after some time and said he did not have an affair or anything to do with the divorce. He also revealed, “That is laughable for anyone who knows us. His ex-wife, Ashton, is still best friends with my girlfriend. Russell and I were good friends when I was in Seattle, on and off the field.”

However, the divorce settlement came in 2014, and Meem got a massive sum as a settlement from Wilson (present net worth is $135 million). As of 2023, Ashton, who also owns some businesses, is supposed to have a considerable net worth of $4 million, accumulated mainly through her divorce from the Broncos QB.

This disheartening conclusion about what began as a romantic tale reflects the challenges public figures face in their personal lives. But again, Rusell Wilson is happily married to Ciara. Meem, on the other hand, prefers to keep a more understated presence, and there are no reports of her being remarried as of now.
