Mark Sanchez was originally set to call Sunday’s matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and Jacksonville Jaguars. But questions about his future with the network have now raised many eyebrows after an incident in Indianapolis on October 5. As Sanchez’s situation continues to develop, Fox officially named his replacement for week 6. Mark Schlereth was called upon to step in for Sanchez for the Sunday matchup. But his appearance on the game day was not as he would’ve hoped.

Schlereth, who joined play-by-play announcer Chris Meyers and sideline reporter Sarah Kustok for the broadcast, experienced a system malfunction in the second quarter. One of the broadcasters was heard saying, “I can’t hear the producer.” That too, while a play was going on. And, if that’s not worse already…
Others also complained of commentator audio getting cut off for almost a minute, commenters lacking chemistry and often talking about unrelated things, and “cameras just not showing what the commentators were trying to talk about (again, multiple instances)” as noted by one social media user.

The verdict? “Dubious commentator quality” and “the production team really dropped the ball this game”. In fact, as per Seahawks report Mookie Alexander, “this was a pretty big game and the production values were a step above public access…The audio cut out, the video froze, it was just terrible to watch.
“Seattle is off FOX for a month, thankfully,” Alexander then lamented.
Unfortunately, the league is not unfamiliar with these scenarios. In January this year, the FOX NFL Sunday crew ran into a brief hiccup during the Commanders vs Lions game. Reporter Jay Glazer’s mic got cut out just as he began a tribute to “5,400 firefighters”. As the reporter continued speaking in silence, his segment ultimately had to be cut off briefly. The issue was later fixed, with Glazer coming back to continue. But this raises a big question: Should the NFL be worried about its broadcasting being handled at a global stage?

NFL’s technical struggles are not restricted to just the conventional broadcast right holders. Last year, as Netflix prepared to air its first-ever live NFL games on Christmas Day, the streaming giant faced its own share of reliability questions when viewers complained of buffering issues in the fourth quarter. The struggles are real, and the worst part is: it’s still happening. This time, it occurred with Schlereth, who took over Sanchez.

Why was Mark Sanchez replaced?
The Seahawks-Jaguars matchup was the second straight week Sanchez has been replaced. Last week, Brady Quinn filled in for him. Many have been asking what has happened to Sanchez? Well, Mark Sanchez has been charged with felony and three misdemeanor counts (battery with injury, unlawful entrance of a vehicle and public intoxication) following a violent altercation in Indianapolis that left him hospitalized with stab wounds.
The incident took place early on Saturday morning. He reportedly confronted a truck driver, Perry Tole, over a parking and loading dock dispute. However, police reports indicate that Sanchez was allegedly intoxicated and aggressive, initiating the confrontation.

In the dispute, Tole suffered serious lacerations to his face, jaw and neck, while Sanchez was later found bleeding heavily near a pub window. He was hospitalized in critical condition.
His return to the booth remains uncertain.
