Who is Sherrone Moore bringing in as Jesse Minter’s replacement? Speculations are trending as Michigan’s new HC faces the daunting task of rebuilding the program’s coaching roster. Jim Harbaugh, while leaving college football, even took valuable staff members to the NFL with him as he commences his role as the Los Angeles Chargers HC. 

Former Michigan defensive coordinator Jesse Minter is committed to Jim Harbaugh as his departure to LA propelled him to transfer and become the Chargers’ new DC. His departure is a blow for Moore and Michigan because he’s one of the major contributing factors in building one of the best defenses in college football that enabled them to win the 2023 National Championship. But now that he’s gone, who could be the worthy replacement? 

Possible replacements for Jesse Minter as Michigan’s DC

Here is a list of the potential candidates who might be able to take up Jesse Minter’s spot as an apt Michigan DC:

  • Steve Clinkscale

Defensive back coaches like Steve Clinkscale don’t usually steal the spotlight even with a vibrant defense the team boasts of. But there’s a reason why Jim Harbaugh was keen on bringing Clinkscale to Michigan in 2021. Under his coaching, he boosted the potential of players like Mike Sainristil, Will Johnson, Gemon Green, DJ Turner, Vincent Gray, and Dax Hill. As an existing co-defensive coordinator with three years in Michigan, he’s one of the best prospects as the new DC.

  • Mike Elston

Another one of Michigan’s own, defensive line coach Mike Elston is another worthy prospect to take note of. He came to Michigan after spending 12 seasons primarily as a DL coach at Notre Dame. With his arrival in 2022, the team managed to perform better in their defense, increasing their sack total from 2022. Some of the players who thrived under his coaching include Derrick Moore, Jaylen Harrell, and Mike Morris, among others.

  • Zachary Orr

Now, coming outside of Michigan’s internal coaching staff, Baltimore Ravens inside linebackers coach Zachary Orr could be another potential prospect as the next Michigan DC considering the Ravens train. He joined Baltimore again in 2022 after one season as the outside linebackers coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021. Before that, he served as the defensive analyst for the Ravens from 2017-2020. He coached players such as Josh Allen and Patrick Queen, among others.

Steve Clinkscale can help by bringing his expertise in coaching defensive backs, which is essential for stopping the passing game of the opponents. Mike Elston can help by developing the defensive line, which is the foundation of any defense. He has proven his proficiency to produce quality players at Notre Dame and Michigan. Zachary Orr can assist by bringing his NFL experience and knowledge of the Ravens’ defense, which is one of the best in the league.
