There’s no doubt that football players take their EA Sports Madden NFL ratings with a pinch of salt. Patrick Mahomes, Michael Thomas, Aaron Donald, Stephen Gilmore, and Christian McCaffrey made the elite Madden NFL 21 elite 99 Club. However, there were certain players in the League who got ratings that very totally inaccurate.

Let’s take a look at six active NFL players who have been given wide off-the-mark ratings in Madden NFL 21. Take a look and see if one or two of your football icons are on the list.

Here’s a list of six NFL players with controversial ratings in Madden NFL 21

Aaron Rodgers – 89

36-years old Rodgers was rated below Tom Brady (90) who is six years his senior. Drew Brees, who is also four years older than the Packers QB, was ranked higher in Madden NFL 21 with a 93 overall rating. Rodgers played behind an arguably weaker O-line in 2019 but still made the NFC Championship game.

Darius Slay – 88

Philadelphia Eagles’ star defensive back Darius Slay was not happy with his overall rating. The cornerback took to Twitter to express his dismay over being ranked at number nine on the list alongside Miami Dolphins’ Byron Jones and Arizona Cardinals’ Patrick Peterson. He is the most well-paid cornerback in the NFL earning $16.7 million per year with the Eagles.

DJ Reader – 84

Cincinnati Bengals’ defensive tackle DJ Reader didn’t seem too pleased with his Madden NFL 21 rating as well. While talking to GMFB, Reader said he felt he “should at least be an 88”. He ended the 2019 season with a career-high 2.5 sacks and 13 quarterback hits. His impressive displays on the field helped him bag a bumper $53 million four-year deal with the Bengals.

Amari Cooper – 93

Dallas Cowboys’ WR Amari Cooper had a productive outing in the NFL in 2019. He completed 79 passes for 1,189 yards and eight touchdowns last season. He is ranked above the likes of Josh Allen (91), Odell Beckham (91), Stefon Diggs (92), Mike Evans (92), and Chris Godwin (88) on the Madden NFL 21 WR list. Some critics have argued that Cooper’s rating is tad bit exaggerated. They added that WR’s such as Allen, Evans, and Godwin should be ranked above Cooper.

JJ Watt – 98

Since 2016, Houston Texans star JJ Watt has been struggling with injuries. Between 2016 and 2017, Watt played just eight NFL games. However, he made a strong return in 2018 and made his First-Team All-Pro selection. But the veteran defensive end was again hit with a season-ending torn pectoral injury. This makes his overall rating of 98 seem a bit suspicious to us.

Rob Gronkowski – 95

New England Patriots great Rob Gronkowski announced his retirement from the NFL in 2018. ‘The Gronk’ is widely regarded as one of the top three tight ends to ever play in the league which is why his retirement came as a shock to many.

However, Gronkowski announced he will return to the NFL with former teammate Tom Brady at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this year. While newsworthy, this still does not change the fact that Gronkowski has not stepped on a football field since 2018. So what could possibly justify the 95 overall rating that he’s been given in Madden NFL 21? We don’t have a single clue but if you do, then please get back to us ASAP.
