All eyes will be on former Oklahoma Sooners star, Baker Mayfield when he takes the field next month. It’s been a tough couple of years for the young quarterback who was the number one draft pick in 2018. NFL franchise Cleveland Browns drafted the promising young man thinking who was being labeled as their ‘messiah’. However, fast forward to 2020, and things are quite different.
Mayfield had a strong start to his NFL career in 2018. But he failed to build on that in the season that followed. In fact, some would even say that the 25-year old ‘underperformed’ in 2019. Mayfield threw for 3,800+ yards last season but had 21 interceptions with a pass completion rate of 59.4. The Browns finished the season with a 6-10 record and failed to make the playoffs yet again.
The Cleveland-based franchise parted ways with Freddie Kitchens and brought in Kevin Stefanski as their new head coach for the 2020 season.
New head coach Kevin Stefanski is gearing up for his first season in charge of the Browns. The former Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator arrived in Cleveland with a sparkling reputation but zero experience as an NFL head coach. Here’s what he had to say about franchise quarterback, Baker Mayfield.
“I think we will be multiple in our approach in what we do. Obviously, we want to do what the quarterback does well so there are schematic things that that we will do – I am not going to list them all. But I think he is on track. He is doing a nice job. He had a nice day in the indoor. Just like the entire offense, we just have to keep at,” Stefanski told Cleveland.com.
Speaking about injured CB Greedy Williams, Stefanski further added, “Yeah, no update on Greedy. He is truly day to day. I like our DB room in total. I think we have some really good veteran corners and some young guys that I really think they are doing a nice job. The guys are taking to the scheme. I think between (defensive coordinator) Joe (Woods) and (pass game coordinator/defensive backs coach) Jeff (Howard) and (assistant defensive backs coach) Brandon Lynch, I think these guys are really grinding them on technique and fundamentals. I think it is a pretty good room.”
The Browns begin their 2020 season with a tough clash against Lamar Jackson’s Baltimore Ravens. Coach Stefanski’s boys will travel to the M&T Bank Stadium to play John Harbaugh’s Ravens. It’s going to be a battle of two former Heisman Trophy winners. Who will prevail, Lamar Jackson or Baker Mayfield?
