Brock Purdy remains a key figure for the San Francisco 49ers. Now the 2022 PFWA All-Rookie Team winner takes centerstage in Sunday’s game. He has a special family member to thank for the resounding comeback. It seems like the young QB sees his father as his role model. Shawn Purdy aka Purdy Sr.’s own UCL injury incident was a major inspiration for the 49ers QB. Six months on from completing his complete recovery, Brock reflects back on what gave him strength during these trying times. The Iowa State collegiate was a special person in his life who helped him with the comeback.

Brock Purdy finds inspiration from his father’s injury woes

Sports run in the Purdy family. Purdy Sr., Shawn Purdy was a minor league pitcher himself in the 1990s. He suffered an injury similar to his son while playing for a premier baseball side. Shawn tore his UCL albeit partially during the 1993 season. The extremity of the injury kept the pitcher in a lengthy rehabilitation process.

The experience came in hand when almost three decades later met a similar fate. Brock too suffered a UCL injury, although more severe than his father. Brock reflected back on the chat he had with his father regarding the same. He recalled “Being able to ask him and go to him for advice with, ‘Hey man, what do I got to do?” as Brock asked his father. Purdy Sr. had sound advice for his prodigal son. “You got to have patience. There’s a process to this. You can’t overnight, all of the sudden heal up.’ ” Hopefully, the rehabilitation did amazing work and the 49ers QB could participate in the practice sessions leading up to the season.

Brock Purdy’s UCL tear injury

The incident transpired during the NFC Championship Game. Brock Purdy suffered a serious injury by completely tearing his ulnar collateral ligament on the right elbow. The Jersey no.13 pulled through the elbow surgery which was deemed successful in early March.

The surgery could have been done earlier. However, as per one of the doctor’s consensus, he advised an MRI. Given that Purdy’s right elbow had an inflammation, it was only wise to go with an MRI. Ultimately, the move proved to be successful. With Purdy fit and roaring to go, the 49ers would be eyeing a win against the Steelers.

Purdy’s comeback journey from a serious injury showcases his strength and willpower. Moreover, Brock and his father have given serious dad-son goals. The 49ers with a rejuvenated captain on their side, would be looking to make it count in their season opener.
