‘Truly Legendary’ – NFL Icon Tom Brady Pays Respect to USWNT Legend Carli Lloyd Upon Retirement

NFL icon and Tampa Bay Buccaneers superstar quarterback Tom Brady paid tribute to Carli Lloyd as the US women’s national team star prepared to play her last game as a soccer professional.

Lloyd played her final game against South Korea Tuesday night at the Allianz Field. The USWNT won by a huge margin of 6-0. The match was Lloyd’s 316th and final cap as she ended one of the most legendary careers in sports history.

Carli Lloyd bids goodbye to soccer

The 39-year-old midfielder/forward has a bag full of achievements in her 17-year career in international soccer. Lloyd has been a member of two world cup winning and two Olympic gold medal-winning teams. She has also been awarded the FIFA player of the year two times (2015 and 2016) and has won four Olympic medals (2008, 2012, 2016 and 2021).

“I want to thank all you fans, the doubters, the critics, everybody — you’ve pushed me to greater and greater heights throughout my career and I’m extremely thankful for that.” Lloyd said in her farewell speech after her final game.

“Thirty-four years playing this beautiful game – It has been an honour. I have been absolutely grateful for every opportunity that I’ve stepped out on this field and I hope that you know I gave it everything I had for every single one of you.”

Tom Brady congratulates Lloyd

Though she failed to score in her last game against South Korea, the USWNT veteran striker has earned much recognition throughout her career, with 134 international goals. So much so that even the NFL icon Tom Brady lauded the tremendous feat achieved by her before the game.

“Hey Carli, congratulations,” Brady said in his tribute video. “I want to congratulate you on an incredible career. You’ve played 17 amazing seasons professionally and your crew is truly legendary. So enjoy your retirement, take care, invest a lot in your future.”

As only a true GOAT recognizes another, the 44-year-old’s admiration for the soccer legend was something special. Brady, who himself is an exceptional athlete in the gridiron, never misses an opportunity to praise those who resemble his propensity.
