Nick Kyrgios believes that Team World can upset Team Europe for the first time at the Laver Cup 2019, this weekend. The Australian, who has previously defeated the Team Europe stars – Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, feels that his team can give their opponents a run for their money.
In a press conference at today’s Laver Cup launch in Geneva, Nick Kyrgios told the media that the Team World has a deeper bond as compared to Team Europe. Kyrgios also revealed that he is not scared of their rivals as he is confident about beating them.
He said: “I know for a fact that I’m closer with these guys and Europe with each other but I’m personally not scared of that team. I’ve beaten every single one of their members and I know guys on my team have beaten them before as well.”
Nick Kyrgios further added that they have been very close to beating Team Europe in the past but unlucky to do so. He continued, “So on paper we’re underman and we’re an underdog but I strongly that we can win like we’ve been so close last year, we’ve had match points to win the whole thing. John had match points against Federer, I had match points against Federer. But we got super unlucky.”
Team Europe boasts five of the top seven ranked players in Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas. On the other hand, Team World’s highest-ranked player is world No. 20, John Isner. However, Nick Kyrgios believes that the ranking has no significance for him.
“I think ranking is the most overrated thing ever. So I strongly believe we’re gonna win. We’re underdogs for sure but I sit in this chair believing… Tomorrow I think Shapo (Denis Shapovalov) is going to go out there, and I think Thiem, honestly, he’s not going to be wanting to play Shapo at all,” said Kyrgios.
