Nick Kyrgios to Miss Shanghai Rolex Masters 2019

Nick Kyrgios decides to skip the rest of the Asian swing after aggravating a shoulder injury during his first-round defeat 7-6(5) 6-1 against Andreas Seppi at the Zhuhai Championships 2019 on Wednesday.

Earlier, the Australian had withdrawn from the final day of the Laver Cup 2019 in Geneva before heading to China. He also held his shoulder responsible for his opening-round exit. Despite that pain, Nick Kyrgios decided to play the doubles match right after his singles defeat but he also lost the opening doubles match.

The 24-year-old was contemplating to take some time off tennis to recover from his injury before announcing his withdrawal from the remaining tournaments in the Asian swing.

Nick Kyrgios wrote in a tweet: “Unfortunately, a collarbone injury I sustained at Laver Cup has escalated and has forced me to pull out of the Asian swing, I’ll be heading back to Australia to rest and recover. See you all soon.”

Towards the end of the first set against Andreas Seppi, Nick Kyrgios started squeezing his right shoulder and swinging his arm between points. And in the second set, one of his first serves dropped as low as 142kph (88mph). Kyrgios explained that he was battling with his shoulder and was unable to serve and he is not thinking of playing until he recovers from his injury and can serve without any pain in his right shoulder.

I was battling with a bit of a shoulder/collar bone injury,” said Kyrgios. “At this rate, I’m not thinking about playing until my shoulder’s — or I don’t even know what it is — but until the front of my shoulder feels better and I can serve. I mean the reason I lost today was that I couldn’t serve. If I could serve, it would have been a pretty routine win for me, to be honest.”
