Nick Kyrgios Was Desperate To Rejoin The Australian Davis Cup 2019 Team Says Lleyton Hewitt

The Australian tennis player, Nick Kyrgios will be playing for his nation in the revamped version of the Davis Cup in Madrid, Spain. Ahead of the campaign in Madrid, the Australian captain, Lleyton Hewitt stated Kyrgios was ‘desperate’ to join the team. 

“We worked through a lot of things at the start of the year and then met up in Indian Wells in March,” Hewitt said. “Nick told me he was desperate to do whatever he could to get back in the team. One thing I have been really proud of with Nick is that he goes out of his way to help the rest of the boys week in, week out Whether it be on the practice court or going to dinner.”

World Number 30, Nick Kyrgios was absent from the Australian tennis team for almost 18-months. Both Hewitt and Kyrgios were engaged in some sort of dispute and disagreement.

He didn’t feature in the historic team event since February 2018 as he failed to meet the ‘cultural standards’. However, the duo resolved their issues and Kyrgios requested his reappointment in the squad.

“As an Australian, it’s pretty lonely out there on tour. You’re away from home for a lot of months throughout the year. He’s been really good in that capacity and he has been really good with whatever I have asked him to do leading into this tie. He had a slight injury and stopped his season early in Asia, and I think at the end of the day, his mindset was ready for this event and he is ready to go,” Hewitt continued.

After his early exit in Zhuhai, China this year, Nick Kyrgios called off his Asian Swing pertaining to a collar bone injury. He took some time off from profession tennis and worked on the injury recovery.

At Davis Cup Finals 2019, the Australian line up comprises of Alex de Minaur, John Millman, Jordan Thompson, Alexei Popyrin and John Peers.
