With the 35-0 record, Djokovic is supreme in starting fast and unsettling his opponent early on. Even when the Serbian is not playing well, he is still able to assert that early dominance by winning the first set. Throughout the year, we have seen players start a bit slow against Djokovic and losing the match.

The latest instance of a slow start hurting a player against Djokovic was Alexander Zverev. At the ATP Finals 2020, Zverev started the match slow and Djokovic broke early on.

The Serbian won the first set but Zverev dominated the latter part of the set. The second set was heavily in Zverev’s favor but he couldn’t win it. Zverev lost in the tiebreaker and ultimately lost the match.

He had dominated the match for the majority of the time. However, the bad start hurt Zverev’s chances and Djokovic clinched the match when it mattered.

Andrey Rublev had a 35-1 record in 2020 after winning the first set. Interestingly, his record was 6-9 after winning the first set prior to 2020.

The one loss that Rublev suffered after winning the first set was against Stan Wawrinka at the Paris Masters. The Russian had comfortably won the first set 6-1 against Wawrinka but a stunning comeback from the three-time Grand Slam champ broke the wonderful streak the Russian had accumulated.

This record for Rublev is a testament to his rise in 2020. He and Djokovic led other impressive records of 2020 as well. Both of them were tied with the most wins this season at 41. Further, Rublev edged Djokovic in titles won with five to the Serbian’s four.
