The match involved a marathon second set tie break, that boasted a record number of 38 points lasting a minute more than half an hour. Andy Murray saved 7 match points and forced a decider on the German, who was ripping winners off both wings, and attacking Murray’s second serve, playing a high risk tennis strategy.

Eventually in the third set he broke Kohlshreiber, which looked like the break point that decided the match. In the post match interview, Murray said he had been playing on the tour for more than 10 years and hasn’t been involved in such a marathon tie-breaker, and was all praise for the German, commending him for his aggressive style of play and his relentless barrage of winners. Kohlshreiber himself said that he was disappointed with the loss, but he said he was happy with his overall performance and that there were a lot of positives to take away form the tournament. This also means that Murray extends his lead at the top in the singles rankings, and will go into the Dubai finals against the Spaniard Fernando Verdasco as the strong favorite.
