Novak Djokovic – “I Understand Why There is So Much Support For Roger Federer”

World Number two, Novak Djokovic respects the British crowd in the O2 Arena regardless he receives support from them or not. During the Wimbledon 2019 finals in July, the audience was cheering for Roger Federer and with the Serb’s phenomenal ability to dampened those cheers he lifted up his Wimbledon fifth title. 

“Look, I said it after Wimbledon finals that, you know, I understand – look, I understand why there is so much support for Roger,” Novak Djokovic said. “He is who he is. And what he has achieved and the personality that he is, he deserves that.”

Whenever the 16-time Grand Slam champion, Novak Djokovic takes on Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal on the ATP circuit, most of the spectators in the house cheer for his opponent. However by playing against the two opponents simultaneously, the Serb happens to be the champion most of the times.

“Sometimes, you know, the crowd is on your side, the majority of the crowd is on your side, and sometimes it’s against you. It’s something throughout my career I had to learn how to handle, how to accept, and how to deal with that,” he added.

“When I said that I was kind of trying to transform the chanting into Novak, Novak when I heard Roger, that’s really what I try to do. It really works mentally in these kinds of moments,” Novak said. 

Besides all the negative vibes around him, the Serb embraces everything with an emphatic attitude. Djokovic believes in focusing on himself, contemplating the point in which he is playing and looks forward to pulling off his victory.

“It will not be anything particularly different in terms of my reaction if that happens. I mean, look, you know, I’m going to accept it and respect it, and that’s it. I’m going to try to focus on what needs to be done for me, you know, tactically in order to win a tennis match. That’s all it is,” he continued.

“Obviously there is a lot of people and tennis fans that like to see us going head-to-head, and of course I understand that and hopefully it’s going to be a packed house and everyone will enjoy their tennis,” the Serb mentioned.

Novak Djokovic had a smooth day at the office by crushing Matteo Berrettini in straight sets at ATP World Tour Finals 2019. Up next, Djokovic will meet Dominic Thiem and the Serb’s meeting with Federer will take place on Thursday evening.
