The hype for January 26 is just insane! Everyone’s holding their breath for the wrestling match-up. And one American wrestling legend has the whole community talking about it. But will his years of dominance and experience on the mat prevail? Or will the young lions whom he will be barring his fangs against prove to him once and all that his time has come?
Spencer Lee, with three NCAA titles under his belt and an Olympic silver to boot, has been ruling the roost in the U.S. at 57 kg for ages now. He’s gearing up for a match against Japan’s world champion, Masanosuke Ono. In a battle of experience with momentum, Lee’s legacy will be tested by this star. Known for his fast moves and strong power, Ono is a challenge that Lee will face.
Spencer Lee was on fire in his journey to the 57 kg final at the Paris Olympics. But then in the finals with Rei Higuchi of Japan, he fell to second place. A recent video shared by Flo Wrestling highlighted, “Ray Huchi… is not likely to wrestle at the World Championships this year… so that’s the one guy that beat Spencer last year; he’s out of the field.”

With Higuchi out of the World Championships, Lee’s path to the top seems less daunting, as the only wrestler to beat him last year is no longer in the mix. “Well, it feels like Spencer’s going to run away with it, right? Well, that was until we found out the news this week: Ono is going down to 57 kilograms for the World Championships,” it added. The news of Ono’s ads has shaken up Lee’s chances.
Here’s where the plot thickens. Spencer Lee’s dominance has been for years, but facing Ono is a whole different game. Ono’s surprise decision to drop to the 57 kg weight class has raised eyebrows. This match will redefine the 57 kg landscape. Ono has made a name for himself this year, taking the wrestling world by surprise with his victories at both the U20 and Senior World Championships at 61 kg.
During his dominant run, he didn’t just win. He crushed it. He beat world champion Vito Arujau by a technical fall (12-0) and took down two-time world and Olympic champion Zaur Uguev 10-2. This challenge has raised the intensity of their upcoming competition.

Spencer Lee’s road to redemption: achievements and setbacks
Spencer Lee’s wrestling career has been wild. Lee’s got quite the trophy case, with wins at the Pan American Games and the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in 2024, not to mention he’s been a U17 and U20 world champ, a two-time U.S. National champ, and snagged three age-group world titles.
He has etched his name in the history books of NCAA wrestling. This includes being a 3-time Big Ten Champion and 3-time Wrestler of the Year. Even with all these wins, things took a turn for him at the Paris Olympics in 2024. Spencer Lee fought tooth and nail but ultimately fell short with a 4-2 loss. Lee was up 2-0 going into the break. It was when Higuchi came back with a new game plan for the second half.

With only 15 seconds on the clock, Lee went for a risky throw. Higuchi was all ready, turned it around, and clinched the win. Lee was left with a disappointing, well-fought silver. Despite the loss, Tom Brands remains confident in his wrestler’s journey. “He’s where he needs to be for the next step, and that’s the most important thing,” Brands said. “When you have a chance of takin’ care of business, you’re takin’ care of it. Put yourself in the best position. He did, and he did it on his own… did it in (a) short turnaround.”
Brands’ words show that he knows that Lee has worked hard in his journey. Lee and Ono are both incredible athletes and now they’ve got the chance to show what they really are. Let us know your thoughts in the comments on Ono’s entry into the 57 kg weight class and how this rivalry might unfold!
