Racing Point F1 Could Soon be Posing Aston Martin Name Owing to Lawrence Stroll

The SportPesa Racing Point Formula 1 team has just one year under its belt, but it may not last long. According to the rumour mill, the team could undergo another change in identity.

As it turns out, automobile manufacturer Aston Martin could get a shoe into the Formula One squad. According to RaceFans and Autocar, Billionaire Lawrence Stroll has been very busy in the business department and is linked to a buy-in at the luxury car manufacturer.

Back in 2018, Stroll Sr led a consortium to take over the erstwhile Force India F1 team. The team went into administration and he rescued them, rebranding the team as Racing Point, with Lance Stroll slotted into the team.

Now, it is believed that he is considering a buy-in at Aston Martin owing to a drop in its value. Apparently, Aston Martin’s share prices have fallen from £19 at launch to around the £5 mark, and registered a loss of £80 million over the first six months of 2019.

According to a source to RaceFans, Lawrence Stroll plans to bring in Aston Martin to F1 if he can buy a controlling stake. An alliance between Aston Martin and Racing Point would certainly benefit the road car company’s technical partnership with Mercedes.

It was also note-worthy that Aston Martin built an engineering centre at Silverstone, close to the Racing Point factory. However, it does beg the question of the effect on Aston Martin’s relationship with Red Bull. The two companies have collaborated on the Valkyrie hypercar.

Stroll, an avid motoring enthusiast with an extensive collection of classic cars and made his money in the fashion industry. However, he was strangely silent on the whole situation.

Aston Martin’s last tryst in Formula 1 began six decades ago when it entered a pair of DBR4s for Roy Salvadori and Carroll Shelby in four races. It returned in 1960 but its front-engined car had been overtaken by rear-engined rivals. So, the team canned its F1 project before the end of the year.
