He often struggled to find a permanent berth in the team with his performances. While his talent with the bat was almost unparalleled, most of the criticism highlighted his temperament.

However, his fortunes changed for the better when he was moved to the role of opener in ODIs and T20Is. The impact also almost instantaneous as Rohit Sharma exceeded all the expectations. He is the only player in the world with three double centuries in ODIs and four centuries in T20Is.

Unfortunately his Test career still needed a bit of work, but once again he slotted into the opener role again. Once Rohit Sharma kicked off his career as a Test opener, he was on a roll. In his maiden Test as an opener in Vizag, he scored century in both the innings against South Africa.

The bad news was that the right-hander was out cheaply in the second Test, giving his critics some arsenal. Now though, he has bounced back in the ongoing third game in Ranchi and threw an open challenge to his detractors.

He scored his first double century in Test to put India on the front-foot. The play came in when India were reeling at 39 for 3 to post a mammoth 497 for 9 (declared). In reply, South Africa were 9 for 2 before bad light brought an end to the day.

At the end of the day, Rohit Sharma looked at his jovial best while he was interacting with the media. The India star loves to be sarcastic with the media and showed it once again as he took a cheeky jibe at the media for their knack of criticising players’ failures.

He said, “Whenever you get an opportunity, you want to make the most of it. You want to perform as well as possible. When I got this opportunity to bat at the top of the order, I wanted to make full use of it. Otherwise so many things would have happened. You guys would’ve written a lot about me,” said Rohit Sharma with a smile on his face.
