Caligari midfielder Nicolo Barella has been heavily linked with a move to Serie A giants Inter Milan and Roma this summer. The 22-year old had a brilliant season with Caligari, making 35 appearances and playing a vital role in guaranteeing his side’s safety from relegation.

Barella has been labelled as one of the most exciting Italian prospects in recent times with a host of top European clubs desperate for his signature. Inter Milan, who kickstarted their transfer window proceedings with the massive signing of former Atletico Madrid captain Diego Godin, were favourites to land the midfielder.

However, Caligari’s staggering €50m-evaluation of the midfielder has prolonged any potential agreement between the clubs with league rivals AS Roma reportedly overtaking the Nerazzurri in the race. Caligari president Tommaso Giulini officially confirmed interest from both clubs, but claimed that he has agreed to Roma’s offer.

“I had an agreement with Inter for Barella on the fixed amount of money since 11 June, with only the bonuses missing”, he said. “Then they disappeared for 20 days so I don’t know if they’re still interested in him.”

“Now I have closed an agreement with Roma which I accepted with total understanding. [Nicolo] Barella will decide after two days of reflection. Barella has never been inclined to choose anyone over anyone else. He’s never agreed personal terms with anyone and is taking some time to evaluate the new situation”, he added.

Nicolo Barella last featured with Italy in the Euro U21 Championships in France. The midfielder scored the opening goal in their 3-1 group-stage win over Belgium. Even after finishing on six points, Italy could not qualify for the knock-out rounds of the tournament.

At 22, he has already won seven caps for the senior team and scored twice for the Azzurri. Inter Milan will definitely let go of a superb talent if they were to miss out on Barella behind Roma.
