Romano Fenati Redeems Himself After Race Win in Austria

Italian Moto3 rider Romano Fenati had been in the news for all the wrong reasons after a few controversies. However, the youngster is on a redemption arc and he certainly delivered today.

The 23-year old fended off stiff competition from his teammate Tony Arbolino and several other riders to triumph in Austria. Fenati clawed his way back to the lead group after being one of 16 riders being penalised. However, that did not faze him at all, as he took control and maintained his lead in a mature performance to win in Austria.

Overtaking was risky as it had rained earlier and sticking to the dry line was crucial. So, the former VR46 Academy rider used all his experience to pull out a lead before he was chased down. With this triumph, Romano Fenati seized his first win since Motegi 2017, with a gap of 1.097s. It was the first time this year that the winning gap has been over a second, especially considering how close Moto3 tends to be.

Teammate Tony Arbolino snatched a 1-2, with pole-sitter John McPhee and Celestino Vietti breathing down his neck. Vietti was also the top rookie finisher and best placing KTM rider, while 5th placed man Jaume Masia risked his luck one too many times on the wetter part of the track, crashing out in the closing stages.

After a short wait Marcos Ramirez lead the race long fiery battle with his Leopard teammate Lorenzo Dalla Porta. Dalla Porta ended up sixth, to take back the championship lead from Aron Canet, who finished tenth.

Kazakh rider Makar Yurchenko claimed his best ever result in seventh, with Jakub Kornfeil in eighth. Niccolo Antonelli was 9th in the run to the chequered flag, ahead of Canet. Rounding out the points finishers were, Albert Arenas, Ai Ogura, Ayumu Sasaki, Dennis Foggia and Darryn Binder.

Alonso Lopez started the race from pit lane following a brawl with his team-mate Sergio Garcia in Brno.
