After the controversial and disappointing end to her US open campaign, Serena Williams has decided to end her 2018 campaign in a hurry. Serena Williams has withdrawn from the upcoming tournament in Beijing in China. After winning here twice in 2004 and 2013, the former champion has not played here since her loss to Sam Stosur in 2014.
The American had a purposeful start to her 2017 campaign, winning the Australian Open early on. However, she later revealed that she was pregnant during the tournament. After a long hiatus to deliver her first child, Serena returned to Indian Wells, where she was dispatched by Naomi Osaka. French Open was another disappointment, as she withdrew from the tournament prior to her match against Sharapova. Serena was the favorite at the Wimbledon as she squared up against former world number one Angelique Kerber. However it was the German who came out on top in straight sets. Poor performances followed as she had quick exits from the San Jose and Cincinnati opens. However she returned strong at the US open. A tournament who’s final was marred by controversies and unwanted interruptions.
After playing only 24 matches in her 2018 campaign, it is unlikely that she will play more this year. Serena has failed to add to her tally of 23 grand slam titles this year, despite reaching two slam finals. This also means that she will not be qualifying for the year end tournament, WTA finals, in Singapore. She is currently sitting on the 16th rank in the WTA singles rankings. Serena Williams might be roped in for the Brisbane open, before she competes at the Australian Open. Brisbane Open has already confirmed the participation of the US open champion Naomi Osaka. The American has not played in Brisbane since 2014, opting to play the Hopman cup in 2015 and 2016.
