23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams had a sad departure from Wimbledon Championships 2021 following an injury in her first-round match. Obviously, Serena is a great champion at Wimbledon and was one of the contenders. However, now with her early exit, she is set to drop out of the WTA top 10 rankings.
Serena Williams began Wimbledon as the sixth seed and was ranked 8th with 4931 points and was defending 1300 points from the 2019 edition of the tournament. Serena had reached the final in 2019 and was beaten by Simona Halep, who also withdrew from this year’s tournament before the draw.
With the first-round exit, Serena will only keep 10 points from her 1300 and hence will drop out of the top 10. Her points will go down to 3641 points and she will drop down to 18th with those points. Her ranking could further go down if others around her like Maria Sakkari, Elise Mertens, etc go long at Wimbledon.

For the first time since 2019, Serena will be ranked outside the top 10. And if she drops out of the top 20, then she will do that for the first time since 2018. Serena’s ranking is taking such a hit that she will be closer to her sister, Venus Williams ranked 111th in terms of points than the World No.1 Ashleigh Barty.
How did Serena Williams exit from Wimbledon Championships 2021?
It was quite a dramatic end to a promising start for Serena. She was playing against World No.103, Aliaksandra Sasnovich, and was on fire with a break up. But she slipped and injured her right knee. From there she had an off-court medical timeout. And soon later she couldn’t continue and the whole Centre Court was astonished.

“I was heartbroken to have to withdraw today after injuring my right leg. My love and gratitude are with the fans and the team who make being on centre court so meaningful. Feeling the extraordinary warmth and support of the crowd today when I walked on – and off – the court meant the world to me,” Serena wrote on Instagram.

Now with the rankings, Serena could drop further down the order. Mainly she will again defend 1300 points at US Open and a bad result there would push her closer to exiting the top 30.
