The USWNT had a surprising exit from the ongoing World Cup. The team was defeated by Sweden in the Round of 16, taking an early dip from the tournament for the first time in history. Fans and legends launched massive criticism of the team, with many slamming the former champions, especially Megan Rapinoe, calling them responsible for the team’s collapse.

USWNT legend and former captain Carli Lloyd was heavy with her criticism of Megan Rapinoe. The former star claimed that Rapinoe was one of the people responsible for the teams’ downfall. Now in a recent podcast with USMNT legend Alexi Lalas, Lloyd explained how the team had fallen off their former practices.

Lloyd while talking to fellow FOX Sports correspondent Alexi Lalas on a podcast, explained her experiences with the USWNT.

“When I first got onto the team. There was just a level of respect for everyone there — for coaches, other players, support staff … massages, trainers, doctors. And as the years have kind of gone by. It’s little stuff, but it kind of amounts to big things, and ultimately affects [performance] on the field.”

Similar to Lloyd, Lalas had also slammed the USWNT for their decline in team spirit. With the USWNT out of the tournament in the first round of knockouts, there have been a lot of questions raised about the team’s performance.

While the USWNT headed into the World Cup with the hopes of achieving a hat trick, their dreams were dashed following their loss to Sweden. Team USA’s loss to Sweden was an anti-climatic finish to what was a disappointing campaign from the defending champions.

While Megan Rapinoe and USWNT started things hot with a win over Vietnam, the following fixtures saw the team struggle. With draws against both the Netherlands and Portugal, Team USA was just out of momentum against Sweden, who came into the game with a three-game winning streak.

With Megan Rapinoe set to hang her boots, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the USWNT, and if they can bounce back from the massive setback in the coming years.
