Despite being one of the greatest defenders of all time, and an iconic leader, Sergio Ramos has garnered infamy for his insolent nature. Now, the soccer world has once again seen his tempers flaring. After losing 2-0 to Athletic Club, Sevilla is now a point away from being in the relegation zone. A frustrated fan got under the captain’s skin from the stands. And the 37-year-old angrily shushed them. Though the player’s gesture may come across as impertinent, ex-soccer star Frank Lebouef thinks the Spaniard has all the ‘right to say shut up to somebody,’ who does not respect him.

“Show a little respect, we’re talking. Have a little respect towards the people and the badge. Respect the people. Shut up already!,” said Sergio Ramos angrily to a fan who shouted at him from the stands and interrupted his post-match interview. Lebouef thinks Ramos did the right thing.

Sergio Ramos’ heated exchange with the Sevilla fan became a talking point in a recent ESPN FC episode. Host Ale Moreno opined that the Sevilla supporter’s frustration was bigger than that of Ramos’. Frank Lebouef, however, was completely supportive of the Sevilla captain. “I think what Sergio did is absolutely fantastic because, yes, you’ve the right to say shut up to somebody. But when you come back to the camera and you say ‘well you know it’s not for them it’s already for us and then they’re going to come with us.’ He’s clever. He’s really involved and I like that. He’s taking responsibility for his act,” Lebouef said.

The France soccer legend condemned the fan for not showing respect to the veteran, despite him not having the best of times lately. Lebouef continued his defense of the 37-year-old, saying he has never taken things lightly as a leader. Undoubtedly, he is true. Sergio Ramos has never shied away from taking responsibility for club and country. Even after shushing the fan, the Sevilla captain remarked that the fans’ frustration is ‘normal‘.

Ramos explains this is what happens ‘without bringing happiness’ to the fans

After yelling at the supporter, Ramos said, We understand the fans’ frustration, it’s normal. A long time without winning. Without bringing happiness to the fans, this is what happens.” These words from the four-time UEFA Champions League winner are a true testament to his leadership prowess. He might have lost his cool, as a relegation concern is nothing but a nightmare for a World Cup winner like him.

That said, the veteran should now make sure his leadership skills reflect on the field. Sevilla will next meet Alaves in a La Liga fixture next week. If lost, Sergio Ramos’ side will embarrassingly plummet into the relegation zone. If not, the veteran defender can silence the frustrated fans, not by yelling, but with the team’s quality on the pitch. Any thoughts? Let us know in the comments below.
