La Liga giants Real Madrid are known to attract and sign the best soccer players. A reputation the club has ever since the 1950s when they had the likes of Alfredo Di Stefano and Puskas playing at the Bernabeu. Coming to 2023, Real Madrid is on the lookout to sign star forwards after the departures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema. PSG’s Kylian Mbappe emerged as the club’s top target but Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti ruled out a move for the Frenchman this summer. Now, according to reports, another player who club legend Guti deemed as an ‘ideal option’ for Real is set for a contract extension.

According to the latest updates from England, Manchester City is preparing to extend star striker Erling Haaland‘s contract. Haaland was the top scorer in the Premier League, Champions League, and in Europe’s top 5 leagues leading City to the first treble in their history last season. But now it looks like Real Madrid have been dealt a severe blow in their pursuit of the Norwegian frontman.

According to several reports in the English media, City is in talks with Haaland and his representatives to put pen to paper on a new contract. This comes just after the Norway ace completed one full season and two months into the new campaign for City.

The Norwegian striker scored 52 goals in 53 games last season for City, shattering records across Europe. But City have decided to open talks with the former Borussia Dortmund striker to discourage him moving to Real Madrid.

Haaland’s current contract and potential move to Real Madrid

It’s no secret that Real Madrid want to sign Erling Haaland and that both Kylian Mbappe and the City center forward are among their top targets in the coming transfer windows. However, Haaland’s contract at City runs until June 2027 making it 3 and a half years more left on his current deal.

The Norway frontman is 23 at the moment and he will be 26 by the time his current deal at the Etihad runs out. So perhaps, Man City wants to ensure that his best playing days are in Manchester and to safeguard further not letting him leave on the cheap.

It’s certain that City will look to sell him for a much higher fee than they signed him for, especially considering how much his market value has skyrocketed after his remarkable debut treble-winning season for the Citizens in 2022/23.
