Comparisons between rising stars and established legends are inevitable. Rising from the ranks at RB Salzburg, just like Erling Haaland, a 20-year-old has made a name for himself in the Bundesliga. Benjamin Sesko, the Slovenian International and RB Leipzig forward has been turning heads with his impressive performances on the pitch lately. But, when it comes to the inevitable Haaland comparisons, he surely has a few words to say.

Let’s delve into what this young talent had to reveal about his own journey, his thoughts on the Haaland parallels, and his decision to spurn Manchester United in favor of Leipzig.

Benjamin Sesko has been compared to Haaland on numerous occasions, due to their similar stature, physical attributes, and goalscoring prowess. However, Sesko has insisted that he is his own player and does not like to be compared to anyone.

As reported by Transfermarkt, in a recent interview Sesko said, “I mean, you are comparing me to someone who is one of the best players in the world. I am my own player. The only thing that makes us kind of comparable is the height. But we have a very different style of play. I like him as a player, but I don’t like to compare myself to anyone; I just want to be myself.”

Sesko acknowledges that such comparisons can be motivational, saying, “They do not represent pressure. I will listen and learn so I can be even better than he is. My teammates at the club tell me that Haaland and I are very similar, especially in terms of speed. Most of them even tell me that I’m better than him!”

It is to be noted that there are some key differences between Erling Haaland and Benjamin Sesko. While Haaland is a more direct and physical striker, Sesko is more dynamic and technical. Sesko is also more comfortable dropping deep and linking up with his teammates, much like Harry Kane, whereas Haaland prefers to play as a poacher.

Sesko’s comments are refreshing in an era where young players are often compared to established stars. It is clear that the Slovenian is focused on developing his own game and becoming the best player he can be.

Choosing Leipzig over Manchester United

One of the intriguing aspects of Sesko’s journey is his decision to decline an offer from Manchester United. When asked about this choice, Sesko offers insight into his thought process: “The thing is, I was not really into that kind of conversation. But I think, yeah, I think it was better just to come here [RB Leipzig].” For the young striker, the familiarity of the Red Bull system played a pivotal role in his decision. He wanted to join a club that aligned with his style of play and didn’t require him to undergo a steep learning curve.

While he may have turned down the Premier League giants for now, Sesko doesn’t rule out the possibility of a future move to the English top flight. “It would be nice to play there. But first of all, let’s focus on the right now, and we’ll see later,” he added.
