Saudi Pro League hasn’t been a cakewalk like it seemed, especially for Cristiano Ronaldo’s teammates. Many superstars who joined from Europe at the beginning of the season were expected to dominate the competition. And the most disappointed would be Al Nassr who acquired the best yet finished second best in the league. In addition, it turns out that one of their key signings will reportedly leave the club, and not on the note he would have liked.

One of the most exciting arrivals for Al Nassr, Aymeric Laporte is heading back to Europe. According to a Saudi soccer news page on X, the La Liga team, Athletic Bilbao, has agreed to sign the center-back on loan with the option of buying from the club in yellow. Moreover, it is assumed that Laporte has accepted a considerably high salary reduction to play in his nation.

Earlier reports suggested that the club was keen on getting their former defender back, but also faced competition from a few clubs in Spain and Italy. Athletic Club tried getting the Spaniard last year when he played a role in the treble-winning season for the Sky Blues. However, mostly on the bench in his last season under Pep, Laporte chose the Knights of Najd to get more playing time and prominence. Laporte agreed to a $29.77 million deal until the end of 2026, but it seems he won’t fulfill even half of the tenure.

Meanwhile, the player has never looked like settling at Al Nassr since the beginning. The 29-year-old already stated his intention to get back to Europe claiming inadequacy in the hospitality of the Middle East. The player also missed quite a few games this season and will feel it could have ended better.

An indifferent end to the season for Aymeric Laporte leaves Cristiano Ronaldo upset

After Al Nassr lost out on the league and the AFC Champions League, Laporte now misses the chance to contribute to the King Cup final. The player was sent off against Al Riyadh after receiving a red card for punching an opponent. The incident left Cristiano Ronaldo red-faced as the club was already 1-2 down against the visitors. Consequently, he will not only miss the next two games but also receive a 25% deduction in salary for the suspension.

Al Nassr with players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Sadio Mane, and Marcelo Brozovic would have loved collaborating with the Spanish international for a star-studded journey. But, it appears like Laporte had different plans.
