It has been a disappointing weekend for Cristiano Ronaldo and Al Nassr. The team that was building on high expectations suddenly collapsed against Al Hilal. The blue side of Riyadh emphatically trumped the yellow one, followed by loads of complaints from Luis Castro and Co. But the win meant a lot to the Al Hilal chief, who rewarded goal-scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic and the team with a handsome cash bonus.

Al Nassr came into the game on the back of 20 consecutive undefeated games. But it took some brilliance from the two Serbian stars in the most important match of the year for Al Hilal, leading to a happy dressing room.

The club has already spent about $300 million in the last transfer window to get the best players from around the world. And it looks like it’s paying off. Now, after the victory, the club’s President has announced a 25,000 cash bonus for each player after the game. Even though the team couldn’t dominate the game in terms of possession, they were clinical enough to snatch the three points from Cristiano Ronaldo and Co.

Months after Al Nassr’s acquisition of Cristiano Ronaldo, Al Hilal went all in to attract the services of Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe. However, after either player denied the move, the club turned to Neymar. Jorge Jesus’ team was then hit by injuries, as their main player, Neymar, is out with an ACL tear. Despite his absence, Al Hilal beat Al Nassr, who had the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Sadio Mane, and Anderson Talisca.

Al Hilal made a statement after winning the game 3-0. The goal-assault started on Al Nassr after a brilliant header from Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in the 64th minute. But it was his Serbian compatriot Aleksandar Mitrovic who ran away with the game, scoring two goals in the dying minutes of the second half.

The Serbian, who earlier claimed that Al Hilal was the Real Madrid of Asia, is leaving no stone unturned to make it true. Contrarily, CR7’s goal-scoring opportunity was rejected in the 73rd minute for a very marginal offside. There was another controversial rejection from the lineman towards the end of the game. Yassine Bounou crashed into the soccer veteran while trying to punch the ball away, however, a penalty was given.

One take at a time

Growing up in a sporting background, I found a passion for soccer through the remarkable 2002 World Cup-winning Brazilian football team. Watching the Premier League where Thierry Henry-starring ‘Invincible’ Gunners and Sir Alex Ferguson’s glorious Manchester United had ruled, I had my heart set on Arsenal. However, Ronaldo Nazario, Rivaldo, and Ronaldinho are my favorite players and Lionel Messi is the GOAT.
