For some people, soccer is more than just a game. It has become an integral part of their lives. Marcelo Morales, a dedicated 23-year-old fan of Boca Juniors and a young police officer from Buenos Aires, found himself in distress after Boca’s shock defeat. Unable to cope with the heartbreaking defeat, Marcelo committed suicide the night after the loss, only to be found unconscious the morning after.

The loss weighed heavily on Marcelo’s mother, who recounted her emotional turmoil by saying, “If he lost, he was bad; he would get sad, he would punch things, he would say that Boca was the greatest thing. However, Boca is garbage. They killed him. Now I don’t have him, and there is no player to give me condolences.”

Disturbingly, just days before the Copa Libertadores final, Marcelo had stated his desperation and threatened to kill himself if Boca Juniors didn’t clinch the coveted title. Sadly, his warnings went unheeded, and the consequences were tragic. “I didn’t think my son would reach the point of killing himself. A few weeks ago, he had told his father, ‘If Boca doesn’t win on November 4, I’ll kill myself.’ We thought he was making a joke,” said the victim’s mother.

The mother of the victim pleaded to all the young fans while weeping that they must remember that soccer is just a game and their lives don’t depend on the results; no matter how bad they are. The Copa Libertadores is South America’s premier club tournament, for which fans across Brazil and Argentina are arduously passionate. However, it is very important to remember that life is far more precious than a sport.

On the other side of this shocking news, Brazil’s Fluminense celebrated their triumph after beating Boca Juniors 2-1 in the extra time. Former Real Madrid icon and 5x-Champions League winner Marcelo declared the Copa Libertadores crown as the ‘biggest trophy in his career.’ His dedication to Fluminense and their historic win now stands in stark contrast to the tragic loss of a devoted Boca Juniors fan.

The shocking incident with Marcelo Morales is a reminder of the emotional toll that sports can sometimes offer to fans. However, it is essential to keep in mind that passion should never overtake life itself.
