Argentina decided to build the mascot of the tournament around a special person in 1987. Gardelito was the name of the mascot. It was a manly little doll that represented the famous tango singer, Carlos Gardel, whereas, after that, the tournament was primarily based on animals, like a nine-banded armadillo for the 1997 edition in Bolivia.
