Well, it seems like the hype is real with NFL star Patrick Mahomes recently engaging in a social media banter with fellow NFL athlete Eli Manning before the upcoming NWSL clash between KC Current and defending champions NY/NJ Gotham FC.

Eli Manning was the first who started things off with the former New York Giants icon taking to his X handle to take a sly jab at Patrick Mahomes. Manning stated, “Hey @patrickmahomes. I added a new ring to my collection thanks to @gothamfc. Come see it up close this Sunday.” The message likely referred to Gotham’s title triumph from last season. However, Mahomes wasn’t going to take it lying down.

Patrick Mahomes responded to the message accepting the invitation with the player adding, “We’ll see y’all Sunday!” KC Current was quick to capitalize on the message as they shared the tweet on their Instagram handle while issuing a statement of their own. The Current, on their handle, stated, “We’ll let the fútbol do the talking from here 🤫 See y’all on the pitch, @gothamfc.”

The back-and-forth between the two NFL stars has surely raised the stakes for the game. KC Current is currently on the top of the standings with 3 wins from their 3 outings. Meanwhile, the defending champions have fallen down the pecking order, with the side 7th in the rankings with 1 win and a loss from their 2 fixtures. A win away from home will give the team a much-needed boost while providing Manning with some bragging rights.

Can Gotham FC stop Patrick Mahomes-backed KC Current?

KC Current has been on a roll this season with the side undefeated so far in their campaign. The club has been lethal in attack with the team bagging 11 goals, becoming the first club to reach the double-digit mark. With the team set to host the defending champions Gotham FC at home, fans will fancy their chances to go 4 in 4. While the former champions might be a tough draw, KC Current has the quality to lock down any attack in the NWSL.
