A dream lived, Cristiano Ronaldo’s career for Portugal has been nothing short of sensational. Despite not winning the World Cup, his performances for the team over 20 years are noteworthy. Keeping history aside, a former French star says the 39-year-old cannot provide the value he used to before. Additionally, he opined that CR7’s career is on the touchline, making a bold claim about Portugal’s chances.

Ex-France legend Frank Leboeuf said that Al Nassr’s captain could be a hindrance for Portugal. The former World Cup winner with France stated, “For me, Portugal are actually one of the contenders for this summer’s European Championships. I actually think they can win the Euros, but only if Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t play. I think his time for Portugal is done,” despite the talisman’s stats.

Perceptions were changed when Cristiano finished 2023 with 54 goals, more than any other player. Impressively guiding Al Nassr, it wasn’t only club soccer where he proved his mettle. The star has seemingly lost a bit of pace, and his ability to maneuver has differed from before. In addition, Portugal’s next set of youngsters has also shown promise during the last few years.

Apart from Ronaldo, Portugal has some highly talented players. The 2016 Euro winners boast three players from Manchester City’s treble-winning squad. Players like Bernardo Silva and Ruben Diaz are an integral part of the Etihad, whereas Joao Cancelo was there until mid-season. And players youngsters like Rafael Leao and Goncalo Ramos also add to their energy. But Ronaldo has the backing of his coach, Roberto Martinez.
