Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy might be a contentious public figure to some. But there’s no denying that he’s an ardent PSG fan. Sarkozy was the president of France between 2007 to 2012. And it was during his tenure that the Parisian club PSG was bought over by the Qatar Sports Investments group. Sarkozy has now spoken out about PSG’s recent decision surrounding star French forward Kylian Mbappe.

This comes shortly after Mbappe flirted with a move to Real Madrid all summer. The Madrid giants were rumored to be eyeing up a move for the French superstar. But to the disappointment of Madridistas around the world, Los Blancos manager Carlo Ancelotti declared that the club would not sign Mbappe or any other player. As we reported earlier, the Real Madrid boss suggested that Real’s pursuit of Mbappe was “100% over”.

In the time since, Mbappe has decided to re-join the PSG squad after a short hiatus while his future was up in the air. Now, it looks as though Mbappe will stay at PSG.

This news comes as a delight to Sarkozy, who has spoken out about Mbappe staying at PSG. According to a report in media outlet Cope via Le Parisien, Sarkozy said, “I am happy that Kylian Mbappé will stay and I believe that the solution chosen is the right one for him, for the club and for the French national team.”

Suggesting that PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi would comment about the situation in the coming week, Sarkozy said, “I think Nasser will talk about this soon, at the end of the transfer market.” Further showering praise on the PSG president, Sarkozy added, “He has done an extraordinary job at PSG.”

In the Cope report, the ex-French president also declared his love for the Paris club. Speaking about being a PSG fan since his youth, Sarkozy added, “I’ve been going to the Parc des Princes since my earliest youth. I’m 68 years old and I still love going there.”

Sarkozy has, perhaps, echoed the buoyant mood around the Parc des Princes as it looks like their beloved star player Mbappe, could stay on at the club after another long transfer saga.

For Mbappe, however, it was back to business as usual. The Paris Saint-Germain forward inspired the Parisian club to an emphatic 3-1 victory over RC Lens in Ligue 1. Mbappe struck in the 53rd minute with a smart side foot finish. The French forward then scored another in the 89th minute to bag a brace as PSG eventually won the game 3-1. The game also saw new PSG signing Marco Asensio get on the scoresheet.
