If anyone in the US Soccer entourage is taking as much heat as coach Gregg Berhlater, it would be their sporting director Matt Crocker. It is no surprise that Crocker is in hot water, as he was responsible for rehiring Berhalter as the US coach. However, the US executive is currently facing backlash for supposedly snubbing the USMNT for heavyweight European teams that feature in the Euros. Yes, per rumors, the US Soccer sporting director missed USMNT’s Copa-exiting loss against Uruguay to watch the UEFA Euros in Germany!

As per these rumors, Matt Crocker was called back to the US entourage to do a review of Gregg Berhalter’s team’s performance in the Copa America. Notably, the findings from this review will determine whether Berhalter will continue in the US camp or not. Meanwhile, Crocker’s alleged absence in the US’s loss was unpardonable for fans and they are holding him to account. Subsequently, Crocker deleted his LinkedIn page, which said he was the US Soccer’s sporting director. Does this bizarre social media move hint that Crocker’s job is also in jeopardy like that of Berhalter? The coming weeks will tell.

Matt Crocker intensely upset US soccer veterans when he brought back Gregg Berhalter to coach the US team. Berhalter was shown the door after a domestic violence allegation surrounding him and his wife became the talking point. After the US Soccer Federation became convinced of Berhalter’s version of events, he got his job back. Crocker, notably, snubbed the current Canada coach Jesse Marsch while searching for a new USMNT manager. Marsch even said he “was not treated well” during the hiring process.

Now, the countdown has started on Gregg Berhalter’s future, amid a massive uproar to remove him from the USMNT coach’s post.

Gregg Berhalter awaits US Soccer’s formal review, while US Legends call for his immediate exit

After USMNT’s Copa exit, Matt Crocker said that the USSF will acutely review the team’s performance in the tournament and take a decision on Gregg Berhalter’s future next week. The fan fury against Berhalter is so intense that many of them mailed Crocker and other executives to sack the current US boss. At one point, even analysts believed that the US team would keep Berhalter in the camp, but that won’t be easy anymore. Meanwhile, former US players such as Alexi Lalas think it is outrageous to even review the USMNT’s performance before sacking Berhalter.

“Matt Crocker needs to review? What, so he needs a spreadsheet, an Excel sheet, or a TED Talk or a retreat in order to figure it out? No. It’s right there,” said Lalas. Hence, in a few days, US Soccer fans will get to know if the current coach will continue to serve the men’s team. Considering how adamant Crocker was to rehire Berhalter, it won’t be beyond him to keep the latter in the US camp for the time being. However, if Crocker’s job itself is in jeopardy in connection with the ongoing rumors, a new day might dawn in the American camp.
