A single player’s brilliance can sometimes outshine an entire team’s efforts. Erling Haaland, Manchester City’s prolific striker, has set the Premier League ablaze since his arrival at the Etihad Stadium last season. Interestingly, Haaland’s scoring exploits have outshone Chelsea in terms of number of goals scored since his debut. As we delve deeper into the numbers, we uncover a record that, despite its brilliance, comes with a tinge of inconsistency.

Haaland found the back of the net a staggering 36 times in the Premier League last season, aiding Man City to a historic treble triumph. This season as well he has continued his goal-scoring spree, amassing an impressive tally of 8 goals in just 6 league matches.

Since his debut in the Premier League last season, Haaland has been nothing short of sensational, netting an astonishing 44 goals in the league. This remarkable feat becomes even more astonishing when you consider that Chelsea, despite their big-money signings and high hopes, have managed to score only 43 goals in the same period. Yes, that is absolutely correct! The Manchester City striker has single-handedly outscored the entire Chelsea squad in the Premier League.

However, despite Haaland’s impressive feat, he has faced a different kind of challenge this season. According to stats published by LiveScore, Haaland has missed more big chances than he has scored this season.

The Norwegian striker has missed a total of nine big chances in front of goal until now, which is a sharp contrast to his 60% conversion rate at the same stage in the previous season. His current conversion rate sits at 29%.

These missed opportunities have not gone unnoticed, especially in City’s recent matches. During Manchester City’s victory over West Ham, Haaland’s frustration was palpable as he squandered chances that could have easily seen him score more goals. Apart from that, in the midweek Champions League clash against Red Star Belgrade, Haaland missed a number of clear-cut opportunities.

Despite his recent struggles, Manchester City boss and head coach Pep Guardiola rushed in to defend his star striker. He asserted that Haaland’s performance is steadily improving every week, despite occasional mistakes.

Guardiola advises against Haaland’s criticism

Pep Guardiola, offered his perspective on Haaland’s performances, acknowledging the missed opportunities while also defending his star striker.

“He has had incredible chances and could have scored 14 or 15 goals. That means we are playing well. Always I have the sense of if the team is doing quite well by the number of chances Erling has. When he is not involved in chances, something wrong has happened with our process and dynamic,” Guardiola said.

“My advice is don’t criticize Erling too much. Criticize the fullback, the central defender, or the manager, but never the striker who scores goals because he will and then you will be in a position where you have to apologize to him,” Guardiola added.

Though Haaland’s incredible goals tally may have surpassed Chelsea’s collective efforts, it comes tinged with missed opportunities that demand attention.
