Even the best players are asked about choosing between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The answer may be easy for some, especially when you have watched them play very closely. But one of Lionel Messi’s old teammates for four years, Ronaldinho, chose Ronaldo over the Argentine when given a choice.

Both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are reaching the final stage of their careers, at least by Messi’s previous statement. But by winning the World Cup and perhaps another Ballon d’Or in the bag, one would have expected Ronaldinho to choose Messi as his pick.

Ronaldinho had the chance to play with many great players. Having played with two icons, Messi and Ronaldo Nazario, he is one of the few fortunate ones to do so. The former AC Milan and Barcelona star, however, wants to play with the highest goal scorer of all time. In a recent video, when asked the question “Who do you choose in your team, Messi or the Brazilian Ronaldo?”

Ronaldinho said, “I played with Messi and Ronaldo. The person I did not play with is Cristiano, and I would like the opportunity to play with him.”  The Brazilian played with many legends, including Rivaldo and Roberto Carlos, but never had the chance to play with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Even though he has retired from professional soccer, Ronaldinho loves catching up on friendly soccer games. He recently played for the Barcelona Legends in a friendly tour in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Ronaldinho’s career has become soccer folklore, sharing the pitch with both Messi and Nazario, while being a legend in his own right.

Ronaldinho’s legendary time with FC Barcelona and Brazil

While at Barcelona, Ronaldinho helped bring back their golden years, making 145 appearances for the Blaugrana and scoring 70 goals. At the same time, he also mentored Lionel Messi, and the two enjoyed a great friendship for four years. Ronaldo Nazário also played for Barcelona much before Ronaldinho’s arrival.

Ronaldinho earned 97 caps for the Seleçao and scored 33 goals, representing his country at two World Cups. It was here, with his national side, that he formed an iconic partnership with R9 and Rivaldo. The silky trio would guide Brazil to a World Cup title in 2002.

The time may be over for the greatest of all time debate, but Ronaldinho’s dream of playing with Cristiano may remain as it is.
