The Donald Trump and Megan Rapinoe row is well documented. Things turned sour between Rapinoe and Trump in 2019, and their feud has been ongoing. The Ballon d’Or Féminin winner suggested that her iconic celebration, also known as “the pose,” was partly inspired by Donald Trump.

Rapinoe hit the pose after she struck twice in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup after the USWNT beat France 2-0 in the quarter-finals. Here’s what she had to say about her celebration…

In a conversation in July 2019 shortly after the USWNT won the 2019 Women’s FIFA World Cup, Rapinoe discussed her celebration and the reasons behind it.

Speaking to ESPN FC, Rapinoe said, “It also obviously came on the heels of you know the tweets from the president and um you know I mean they were just crazy crazy tweets. I can’t believe that he was taking his time to tweet at me and not run the country.

“But it was just this moment I actually felt like it really wasn’t my celebration personally wasn’t just for me but it was like you and nobody will take our joy you won’t take our passion you won’t rob this from us you won’t take our happiness you know we’re gonna stand up with a smile you know with our full chest,” she added.

Rapinoe was instrumental in the USWNT’s World Cup win in 2019. But her celebration remained an iconic moment from the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup and still is even today.

Rapione’s “pose” celebration broke the internet

Rapinoe’s celebration quickly spread like wildfire across the internet and became part of several memes. Speaking about her celebration becoming a meme, Rapinoe said, “I think it’s just called the pose. I did it once before the World Cup in a friendly in Denver against Australia certainly not with the kind of impact that it’s had now.”

“It’s an actual internet meme so I don’t know it was sort of in the moment and kind of off the cuff,” she added. Her celebration also had Twitter in splits. But more than hype and media cover, it also touched several people like American media person Bill Simmons who tweeted this.

It’s certain that Rapinoe’s celebration has become iconic not just in soccer but across all sports. Especially considering what Rapinoe intends it to stand for which remains relevant even today.
