Back in the COVID-19 era, sporting leagues and entities across the world were netting record losses due to multiple reasons. It was at that time that countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar realized that there was a big gap in the soccer world. Hence in a bid to kickstart soccer culture in their country, both the parties bid to be the host for the “Supercopa de España”. After all, the tournament guarantees a very high chance of Real Madrid and Barcelona competing for the title.

Qatar won the bid easily thanks to a much more favorable deal than Saudi. This led to the RFEF signing a pre-agreement to take the competition there. However as per ‘El Confidencial’, this is where Gerard Pique swooped in. According to Juan Rubiales, the ex-Barca icon arm twisted his connection with Rubiales and urged the RFEF chief to backtrack from the pre-agreement. He instead asked Rubiales to give Saudi the hosting rights since his company Kosmos would have earned a higher rate of commission from the country.

The fact that these revelations are coming from Juan Rubiales, the nephew and ex-colleague of Luis Rubiales is truly stunning. However this wasn’t the only serious accusation against Pique. As per a previous report by the publication; Pique and Rubiales teamed up with AFE chief David Aganzo and used Lionel Messi’s name to conduct the tournament in January.

Traditionally, the “Supercopa de España” has been organized in the summer over the years. However, RFEF chief Luis Rubiales wanted to organize it in Saudi during the January window. But in order to pull this operation, Pique and Rubiales would have to deal with La Liga. Hence Pique decided to approach Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE) president David Aganzo.

The legendary defender once again swooped between the two parties to maneuver a mutually beneficial deal between Rubiales and Aganzo. The ex-Barca icon did so by dangling the name of his Barca teammate Leo Messi. As per the publication, Pique confirmed to both parties they have “Leo behind us” for this move; hence they are free to approach La Liga officials with the proposal. But in reality, La Pulga was completely unaware of this.
