Cristiano Ronaldo just added another milestone to his credit. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Google announced the names of entities that have been topping their searches in 25 years. Per Google, Cristiano Ronaldo is the most searched athlete in the last 25 years. However, Ronaldo fell short of becoming this year’s most-searched athlete. Interestingly, Ronaldo was not even the most searched athlete in Portugal, rather it was an Argentine star.

According to Google, Argentina’s World Cup-winning star Enzo Fernandez overshadowed Cristiano Ronaldo in searches, and that too in Portugal. Here is why the Portuguese fans were more curious about Enzo Fernandez than their own CR7.

According to Maisfutebol’s report on the aforementioned Google data, Enzo Fernandez is the most searched athlete in the Portuguese region. Fernandez’s staggering $132 million move to Chelsea in January is at the heart of his massive popularity among Portuguese netizens. He joined Chelsea after his stints at Argentina’s River Plate and Portugal’s Benfica.

Fernandez’s time at the Portuguese club, his World Cup win with Argentina, and the subsequent multi-million dollar move to the Premier League giant all seem to have factored in him, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo to top Google searches.

Apart from falling short of Enzo Fernandez in Portugal’s Google searches, Ronaldo failed to become the most searched entity of Portuguese origin. That honor, unsurprisingly, went to the Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa. Meanwhile, Pope Francis is the most searched international figure among the Portuguese netizens.

It is indeed interesting to note that two Argentines, Pope Francis and Enzo Fernandez, have topped Portugal’s Google searches. However, Cristiano Ronaldo falling short in Portugal doesn’t mean he lost domination in Google searches.

Cristiano Ronaldo dominates Google’s global charts!

According to Google data released in October, Cristiano Ronaldo topped the list of most searched athletes globally. Ronaldo continued to dominate in the aftermath of Lionel Messi’s much-talked-about move to MLS’ Inter Miami. Moreover, Neymar, despite his lucrative move to Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal, also failed to surpass Ronaldo. Then, Google had recorded a staggering 199.4 million searches under Cristiano Ronaldo, taking him light years ahead of his contemporaries.
