This World Cup is full of action, drama, and controversies. From the day Qatar won the hosting right, there had been numerous controversies; be it corruption allegations against FIFA and Qatar officials, or human rights concerns. FIFA was always under heavy fire when it comes to letting Qatar win the hosting right. They had to make an unbelievable amount of changes, and so did Qatar. FIFA might still face a backlash from teams because of their last-minute decision.

Qatar had invested almost 200 Billion USD in the infrastructure they had to have for hosting a tournament of this size. FIFA hoped that once WC will start, things will smooth out once matches start and everybody is playing for glory. This plan, however, might not age well and FIFA might face legal action from various European soccer teams.

Last straw for FIFA

The latest issue is in development for weeks. Various European teams wrote to FIFA about their captain wearing a multicolor band in support of LGBTQ+ right. The proposed armband had ‘one love’ written on it. But FIFA failed to get back to the teams until the tournament had already started.

Harry Kane, the captain of England, was set to wear the band in their first match against Iran, disregarding the ruling of FIFA in that matter. FIFA forced their hands and Harry had to drop the band. FIFA released a statement saying any player spotted wearing the band will be booked and subject to a harsher penalty.

We have been clear about this for a long time. We have been discussing it in the Nordic region since August. I’ve thought it again. I imagine that there may be challenges if Denmark leaves on its own. But let us see if we cannot have a dialogue on things.
