In the summer transfer window of last year, Manchester City made headlines with their massive spending. One of the standout signings was Erling Haaland, who immediately made his mark in the Premier League. Joining Haaland at City was Kalvin Phillips, a talented defensive midfielder with high expectations. However, Phillips has yet to truly shine for City, but Coach Pep Guardiola believes his best is yet to come.

Since arriving at City, Haaland has been nothing short of extraordinary. He has shattered numerous goal-scoring records and played a pivotal role in City’s triumphant run to a treble. His exceptional performances have even put him in contention for the prestigious Ballon d’Or award. On the other hand, Phillips has struggled to make his mark.

Since joining City in July last year in a deal that cost them $57 million his playing time has been limited, and when given the opportunity, Phillips has failed to impress. Despite this, Pep Guardiola, the esteemed coach of Manchester City, believes that Phillips has not yet shown his true potential. Guardiola recently expressed his admiration for what Phillips achieved under the coaching of Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds before joining City.

Guardiola stated, “I’d love to have done with Kalvin Phillips what Marcelo Bielsa has done to him”. This sentiment highlights Guardiola’s belief that the success Phillips experienced at Leeds can be replicated at City. The Spanish manager further added, “But he is open-minded, he always wants to learn, wants to help and this is what we want to try to do”.

Guardiola’s comments make it clear that he has not given up on Phillips. Despite the midfielder’s slow start at City, Guardiola remains optimistic about his future with the club.  his belief might soon come to fruition as City’s primary defensive midfielder, Rodri, is currently sidelined due to a red card against Nottingham Forest.

This presents an opportunity for the Englishman to demonstrate his exceptional abilities. With Rodri suspended for three matches, Phillips may secure his inaugural start of the season. Meanwhile, his teammate Haaland, appears poised to surpass yet another record-breaking feat.
