Bend It Like Beckham charmed the audience with its heartwarming portrayal of a young girl’s passion for soccer against South Asian cultural norms. As reported by Mirror, in an exclusive conversation, film creator Gurinder Chadha revealed some behind-the-scenes anecdotes about the film, and how Beckham helped the film achieve success across the United States. Chadha, reminiscing about the film’s success, revealed that it was David Beckham who acted as a major benefactor of the film’s success.

The filmmaker stated, “When we approached David, he was actually very supportive because he wanted to encourage more girls to play football. He didn’t know at the time, and I didn’t know, that it was going to take me about four years to get the film made, and by the time the film came out, he now had the ‘Beckham’ brand. Suddenly, he was everywhere, and I think that helped us enormously with the film.” Chadha then emphasized the fact that it was a perfect moment for the film to be launched in the US, as nobody knew Beckham at that time in America, and she initiated that.

The film went on to achieve remarkable success in the United States, thanks to David Beckham’s increasing brand value. Chadha elaborated, “So, we kind of put David on the map when the film garnered so much success. In a way, we helped him and he helped us.”
