It was a career that had its own flavor—a hard-fought one but well rewarded for Hugo Lloris. The player had the fortune of leading one of the golden generations for France after reaching two consecutive World Cup finals and winning one. But his 12-year career at North London never saw him win an English club title. However, the player has now moved on and is very content with his newly chosen test with LAFC in the MLS.

Meanwhile, the 37-year-old French star’s future at Tottenham Hotspurs was already lingering in mid-2023 with a thigh injury. And now the player has revealed what it meant for him to leave his abode for more than a decade. According to reports, Lloris said, “I don’t regret having made this choice for a second,” after making a rather surprising deal with the team from California this December.

This will be the fourth club for the former Olympiques Lyon player, who will have a contract worth $350,000 until 2024 with an option to extend until 2025 and 2026. The wages are much less than what he earned in Europe due to the regulations and the financial cap in the MLS, but it does not matter to the World Cup-winning star. Lloris was having a tough time keeping up with the game in the Premier League. The goalkeeper had some hiccups for the club earlier in the season and showed signs of slowing down.

Subsequently, the former Spurs number one also went on to hang up his boots for the national team, expressing the desire to prolong his club career. Lloris stated last year, “I want to continue to perform, to live this sport as I have always done, and maybe this decision will give me more physical freshness with my club.” However, the star’s stint did not last much longer; his last game for Tottenham came in April last year against Newcastle, which they lost 6-1. But the player is now looking even further.

Hugo Lloris explains why he chose MLS

It was the new horizons that were beckoning the keeper after England. Hugo Lloris, citing new challenges as the reason for his move, said, “I don’t have the national team anymore because I retired a year ago, so this was a chance to discover a new continent with my family. California is an amazing place.” The player, meanwhile, had a French Cup and a French Super Cup, with Lyon having the only club titles in Europe.

Not playing for more than 10 months might have frustrated the 2018 World Cup-winning captain. The player also rejected a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia last year, which was $126k per week. Nevertheless, Lloris liked the MLS project and decided to follow in the footsteps of greats like David Beckham, Kaka, and Lionel Messi.
