Rothen stated, “When you’re a chatterbox, you have to accept that the stick will come back at you and that you’ll be teased.” Mbappe’s clash with the crowd was a result of offensive chants directed at his teammate Achraf Hakimi. However, Rothen was quick to distinguish between the nature of the insults, deeming the chants against Hakimi as ‘ridiculous’ but asserting that Kylian Mbappe stands above such things.

The tension in the stadium escalated when PSG’s Randal Kolo Muani won a late-game penalty. As Mbappe prepared to take the spot-kick, he had to face a plethora of taunts and whistles from the stands. Although the initial attempt was saved by the opposing keeper, Mbappe’s quick reaction allowed him to convert the rebound, securing his second goal, and a vital victory for PSG.

Rothen summarized the moment by stating, “Between the players who trampled on the penalty spot, the crowd, who had inappropriate words for Mbappe, and the context with the whistling, he took his penalty and then responded. As far as I know, it’s a human reaction from a soccer player.” In Kylian Mbappe’s defense, Rothen underlined the very essence of being a soccer star, asserting that such reactions are fundamentally human.

Is Mbappe’s criticism justified?

Mbappe’s reaction to the Brest fans has sparked a debate about whether or not it is justified for players to taunt the crowd. Though some people believe that it is unsportsmanlike and not professional, others state that it’s perfectly understandable to react emotionally to abuse from stands. Ultimately, whether or not Kylian Mbappe’s reaction and criticism from it was justified, is a matter of opinion. There might be no right or wrong answer.
