Ex-Al Ettifaq star Jordan Henderson became the first big name to exit the Saudi Pro League this season. The former Liverpool captain who signed a two-year deal with the side this summer has left the side for Ajax in less than seven months. The English star, who’s signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Dutch side, talked about his time in the Middle Eastern League during his press conference. While many expected the player to criticize his time in Saudi Arabia, it seems like the Englishman has nothing but praise in mind.

While Henderson might be happy with his move to Ajax, the top brass in Saudi Arabia are not too pleased with the player’s actions. Al Ettifaq president, despite granting the player his release, issued a parting shot claiming the club did not want Henderson in their ranks if the player wasn’t committed to their cause.

The newly signed Ajax star addressed the media after penning a two-and-a-half-year contract with the side. During the press conference, Henderson was asked about his short time in Saudi Arabia. The player took a very direct approach as he stated, “Many of you think that I will criticize the Saudi League after my exit, but I will not do this. I respect the Saudis very much and thank them for welcoming me.”

Henderson then commented on his move to Ajax, adding, “Looking back at that time, obviously it was a big decision that was right for me and my family at the time. But you know things happen as I said before things happen, things change quickly in football. The opportunity was too big to turn down. I’m at this big club and I’m excited by the opportunity, and this is why I wanted to come.”

This is a big decision for Jordan Henderson as the player hopes to maintain his spot in Gareth Southgate’s English national team. The deal is likely to benefit both sides. While Ajax will benefit from the presence of the veteran midfielder, the player on the other can get a chance to show his worth on the European stage.

Al Ettifaq president comments on Henderson’s exit

Henderson’s exit from the Saudi Pro League has come off as a big surprise for Al Ettifaq. However, the club seems to be ready to move on after losing one of their best players. Al Ettifaq president Al Misehal spoke on the Englishman’s exit while talking to the press.

Misehal thanked Henderson for his time in the league, wishing him the best for his future. However, Misehal did not miss the opportunity to fire a shot at Henderson, stating that the club was happy to let the player leave if he wasn’t committed to being with the club. In a press conference, Misehal said, “There is a lot still to play for. But this is a very tough league and the team performances required and expected by the club in the second half of the season under coach Steven Gerrard demand complete unity and commitment from all players and staff, and we look forward to regaining new momentum from this point forward through our winter training camp.”

It will be interesting to see if the Englishman can turn things around, following his move to Ajax.
