Wrexham owners lost a huge amount of money on getting the club promoted
The running of a soccer club in England is a business that requires massive amounts of money and effort. A huge sum is also spent on signing new players every summer and January transfer window. These expenses further rise in the case of the clubs that play in the lower divisions. And the same thing happened with the owners of Wrexham as well. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney had invested big money to get promoted.
In the second season of the Wrexham documentary, Welcome to Wrexham, the club’s executive director Humphrey Ker reveals to the owners that the club has lost loads of money after buying the club. He then refuses to tell the exact amount on camera. Later, at the request of owner Ryan Reynolds, advisor to the Board Shaun Harvey reveals that the club has lost an estimated £10 million (which converts into roughly $12 million). Ryan Reynolds is heard saying on camera, “I’m gonna go throw up,” after the number gets revealed.

The number is humongous. Anyway, losses for the club will not entirely surprise the owners. This is because Ryan and Rob were aware that they would have to keep investing in the club. It is a long-term project and a long journey to success. However, it looks like the soccer audience is enjoying their journey in the documentary.

The fan following of Wrexham before the arrival of Ryan and Rob was restricted to the community in Wales. However, after the arrival of the American ownership, the club is slowly becoming a global club with fan following from around the club. This is also because of their documentary- Welcome to Wrexham. It started from the day they were in the process of buying the club and the soccer audience got to see it all from the views of the owner.
The documentary covers all the aspects of Wrexham as a soccer club. It has also helped the club bring in more sponsorships. There are now games of Wrexham that are streamed in America. Hence, the club has also benefitted from the popularity of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. This series has also covered the journey of Wrexham players who have stayed with the club through its ups and downs.
