Good samaritan Lionel Messi

OrCam Technologies is an Israeli startup that produces AI-based wearables which help visually impaired people. OrCam MyEye is a small wireless device that fits on pair of sunglasses. With AI technology, it can read printed and digital text from any surface aloud to the device user. Newspapers, books, computer and smartphone screens, restaurant menus, labels on supermarket products, and street signs become accessible to the user.

Lionel Messi joined as an ambassador of the OrCam in 2020. It was decided the Argentine would gift one OrCam MyEye every year to the visually impaired person with an inspiring story. This year it was Domingos José dos Santos. Domingos is native to Bahia, Brazil. Messi took to Instagram to share the story of Domingos.

“I am proud to share with you the heartwarming story of Domingos, a blind student from Bahia, Brazil. Thanks to the revolutionary assistive OrCam MyEye technology, Domingos’s life has been transformed, providing him with increased independence, enabling him to attend college, and helping him achieve his biggest dreams,” wrote Messi on his Instagram.

Domingos lost his eyesight when he was two in an accident. He was excited after using the device as he got to read his first physical book. It also helped him to recognize his close ones and feel the technology is making him inclusive. OrCam MyEye can have an impact on the lives of millions in the future.

Messi is the face of technology that can impact millions

There are 1.4 million children aged 0-14 with complete visual impairment. The data further state 22.6 million children have moderate to severe sight loss, and 46.6 million children with mild sight loss. Meanwhile, OrCam MyEye, if used judiciously, can impact the lives of millions of visually impaired children.
