Inter Miami Transfer News – Edison Azcona Shown Exit Route; Federico Redondo ‘Confirmed’ to Join Lionel Messi & Co.

2 days is all that remains for Lionel Messi and Inter Miami’s MLS opener. Yet, it seems David Beckham & Co. are still busy in the transfer market. While most clubs are trying to strengthen their squad, Inter Miami recently made a puzzling decision to let star midfielder Gregore leave. And now, new to the exit list is Edison Azcona. The highly-rated youngster was expected to be the future of the club, but it seems the management has had a change of heart.

One possible reason for Inter Miami’s frantic transfer activity could be to meet the MLS roster compliance. After all, a high-level executive elucidated the club’s predicament by saying, “They are screwed.”

Edison Azcona: A victim of the roster compliance struggle?

Dominican midfielder Edison Azcona is on the verge of joining the USL’s Las Vegas Lights. as per Tom Bogert. Although it is a loan deal until June 2024, it includes an option for a permanent transfer as well. Despite being a home-grown player, the 20-year-old has found opportunities hard to come by with just 10 senior MLS appearances (109 minutes) for the Herons. Hence, a move away might be the right choice for his career development. But, for the management, it might be a case of having their hands tied.

The MLS has several salary constraints. For the 2023 season, the base salary budget was $5.21 million. In case, a player’s salary exceeds this budget charge, the MLS offers relief mechanisms like General Allocation Money & Target Allocation Money. In spite of this, Lionel Messi’s side had 10 players who exceeded the budget limit! Hence, the option available for the club is to offload players, preferably those on were on high paychecks.

Moreover, the transfers have to be finalized by February 20. The sale of Gregore was in alignment with achieving this objective. Likewise, with Edison Azcona. However, Inter Miami fans need not be worried about their squad running thin, as a talented youngster is set to join Lionel Messi & Co.

Federico Redondo is finally set to team up with Lionel Messi!

The Federico Redondo transfer saga was quite interesting. After initial reports that the move was agreed upon, later news stated that the deal crashed. The reason stated at the time was the budget restrictions. Yet, the talented defensive midfielder will play alongside Lionel Messi & Co. in the upcoming season. The move has been reportedly confirmed, subject to a medical.

The Herons will be paying Argentinos Junior, $8 million for the transfer, and Redondo will sign until 2027. Federico who is the son of Real Madrid icon Fernando Redondo, had interest from various European clubs like Liverpool, AC Milan & Real Madrid. Hence, the move displays the increasing appeal of playing in the MLS. Perhaps, a consequence of the Lionel Messi effect.
