Even the calmest athletes can be very aggressive during the crunch moments in sports. Argentinian soccer superstar Lionel Messi is arguably the calmest soccer player in the world. He has always kept his head down and let his skills and goals do the talking. However, the pressure of winning at the highest stage of the game can crack even a superstar like him. Nevertheless, Qatar was different. It was his last chance to win the only trophy he had never won, and this incomprehensible pressure got the worst out of the star.

Although the road to WC 2022 was tough, the team pulled through and won with major contributions from the man himself. Lionel Messi won the player of the match award in all the knockout matches, setting a new standard. Fans witnessed his greatness as he lifted the golden trophy after conquering the entire soccer world. Even though the Argentinean achieved his biggest dream, he wasn’t able to do it without some controversy.

Lionel Messi is regretful over an incident at the Qatar World Cup

After the game, Messi had the now famous interview. He was very aggressive towards the Netherlands striker Wout Weghorst. The football world was shocked to see the usually reserved Messi hurling insults at former Netherlands boss Louis Van Gaal.

Talking about his exchange with Weghorst in an interview with infobae Messi said, “I don’t like what I did, I don’t like what happened afterward… These are moments of a lot of tension, a lot of nerves. It is very quick and people react the way they react. Nothing was planned, it just happened. I reacted that way. There had been many things with this player, moments of tension like these… I was in the mixed zone, it had just happened. I don’t like to leave that image, but these things happen.”
