Jose Mourinho has coached some of the biggest names in soccer, such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, and Frank Lampard, among others. But he has missed out on a chance to coach the legendary Lionel Messi. Let alone coaching Messi, he played for Mourinho’s arch-rival when he was managing Real Madrid. Now left without a job after AS Roma’s sacking, Mourinho revealed the names of players he badly wanted to have in his team once. And Leo Messi surprisingly tops that list.

In a recent conversation with the influencer ‘Ohm’ on his YouTube channel, Jose Mourinho revealed the superstars he wished to have coached once. For example, I never got to coach Lionel Messi, but then nobody can coach Messi. It is absurd to think you could coach him because he was born with everything and already knows everything. He might teach you some things. All you could say is that you had the honor of having him in your squad,” said the Portuguese boss.

Mourinho added that he wanted Italian legend Daniele De Rossi at either Inter Milan or Real Madrid. Besides, he also wished to have AS Roma legend Francesco Totti in Inter Milan during his prime. But Totti’s loyalty towards Roma is a part of soccer folklore, as he spent his entire career with that club. Anyhow, Mourinho achieved unparalleled success at Inter Milan without the services of De Rossi and Totti. Mou won a treble with the Milanese outfit. Anyhow, the ‘Special One’ can still fulfill his unrealized dream of coaching Leo Messi one day.

Can Jose Mourinho ever link up with Lionel Messi?

Jose Mourinho is currently exploring his next destination after AS Roma’s sacking. Should he be available on the market when Inter Miami changes their coach, Mourinho can unite with Messi like he wanted. Miami currently has no plan to let go of their boss, Tata Martino. But if things go southward under Martino and David Beckham shows him the door, the ex-Real Madrid boss could team up with the ex-Barcelona superstar.

Meanwhile, the Portuguese boss had once said he would like to coach a soccer team in the US. “I see myself coaching a [club] team, coaching the national team, or helping develop soccer in the U.S. When I’m tired of winning things in Europe, it’s something I want to do,” he said in an interview in 2011. Anyhow, so far, there is no clarity regarding Mourinho’s future. He was linked to Leo Messi’s former club and his arch-rivals Barcelona after Xavi announced his imminent exit. My journey as a sports aficionado was not colored by soccer initially. The 2006 FIFA World Cup, however, changed me, as I fell in love with the beautiful game. From cheering on Real Madrid to channeling an inner analyst with my pals during every other World Cup and kicking the ball timelessly, soccer is now a therapy for me with boundless conversations.
