Lionel Messi had to pause for a moment to compose himself in the recent Apple documentary, ‘Messi’s World Cup: The Rise of a Legend.’ The subject that caused the Argentine maestro to react this way was a player he is compared to throughout his entire career and is considered one of the greatest of all time. That iconic player is none other than the late Diego Maradona.

Their similar stature and shared left-footed play style have ingrained habitual parallels between Messi and Maradona. Importantly, in 2022, the 36-year-old achieved a monumental milestone by fulfilling an entire nation’s dream – paralleling El Diego’s illustrious triumph in securing a World Cup victory in 1986. Nevertheless, for the Inter Miami captain himself, aligning him directly with Maradona isn’t wholly accurate or desired.

Lionel Messi feeling the emotions in the latest documentary

In the documentary, Lionel Messi was questioned about his initial thoughts when he first drew comparisons to the legendary Diego Maradona. The Barcelona legend appeared surprised by the question and was visibly emotional. He even had to pause to collect himself before addressing the topic. Nevertheless, He humbly articulated, “I would not dare compare myself to him. He was a unique player.”

It is widely recognized that Lionel Messi has exhibited profound respect towards the Napoli legend throughout his career. This reverence was clearly visible when he honorably dedicated his World Cup triumph in Qatar and 8th Ballon d’Or victory to the revered late Maradona.

In the end, despite his record-breaking achievements, La Pulga refuses to compare himself to the 1986 World Cup winner. However, according to Argentina president Javier Milei, there is no doubt that Lionel Messi is the superior player between the two.

The president of Argentina calls Messi the ‘most important Argentine’

Javier Milei, the President of Argentina, recently participated in an interview with Argentine media outlet LaNación+. During the interview, he snubbed Maradona to crown the 8x Ballon d’Or winner as the greatest ever. In his words, “Messi is the greatest player of all time. He’s outrageous. There’s an article out there titled ‘Messi is impossible’ which outlines how he’s the best at every single aspect of the game. He’s a phenomenon.”
